Choosing The Right Stone

What should I look for when I buy a Gemstone?

The Four Cs of Gemstone Grading—Colour, Clarity, Cut, and Carat Weight—are essential factors in determining the value and beauty of a gemstone. While many elements influence a gemstone’s worth, these four criteria provide a straightforward and accessible way to understand the key aspects of any gemstone.

What is a heated gemstone?

Heated gemstones have undergone heat treatment to improve their color, clarity, and sometimes durability. This is a standard practice in the gemstone industry, applied to a wide range of stones such as rubies, sapphires, aquamarines, tourmalines, topaz, morganite, and many others.

Can I buy heated gemstone at a cheaper price?

For lower-priced gemstones, the price between heated or unheated won’t differ too much generally. This changes when it comes to larger gemstones, but unheated gemstones do carry a premium, especially if good quality.

How can I tell the difference between a natural and a treated gemstone?

If you are not an expert, it’s impossible to tell the difference. Treatments can only be identified by gemological laboratories and are detailed in the certificates. Fine Facets provides every gemstone with at least one certificate from an independent gemological laboratory.

Investing on Gemstones

Why invest in gemstones?

Gemstones are much smaller and lightweight, making them an excellent investment that retains value while concentrating it in a much smaller volume compared to assets like gold. They are easy to store, transport, and pass down to generations, offering both practicality and enduring worth.

What are the best gemstones to buy as investments?

Naturally colored, untreated gemstones—such as rubies, sapphires, and emeralds (Big 3)—are ideal for long-term investments. For those with an established portfolio, adding unique gems like tourmaline, alexandrite, and tanzanite can provide excellent diversification. Diamonds also remain a reliable choice for enduring value over time.

What is the typical investment horizon for gemstones?

Gemstones offer an excellent way to store and concentrate value in a compact form, with no speculative risks involved. We recommend an investment horizon of at least 5 to 10 years for optimal returns.

What kind of returns can I expect from investing in gemstones?

Over the past decades, the value of rubies has grown by more than 8% per year, while sapphires and emeralds have seen annual increases of approximately 4-6%. Blue sapphires can be a good investment, with some experts predicting annual value increases of 6% or even more.
